2017: Falsified antibacterial medicines in Cameroon
The incident occurred in Cameroon (West Africa) in September 2017, where staff members of the DIFÄM-EPN-Minilab-Network found suspicious Penicillin-V tablets at an open market street shop. A quick quality check with the GPHF-Minilab confirmed the first suspicion and much more sophisticated laboratory analysis at the Pharmaceutical Institute of Tübingen University in Germany made it clear: the sample certainly contained no antibiotic. What it contained instead was a fraction of the antipyretic agent paracetamol. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization in Geneva issued an appropriate medical product alert.
