2019: Fake antibacterial medicines found in Chad
The Minilab working group of the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network discovered falsified cotrimoxazol tablets without any active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) circulating in Chad. The absence of APIs has first been detected with the mobile Minilab technology of the Global Pharma Health Fund and has later been confirmed by pharmacopoeia testing at Tubingen University, Germany. The indicated active ingredients sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are used for the treatment of patients suffering from bacterial infections. If, like in this case, the tested tablets consist only of starch and the active ingredients are missing, the infection cannot be cured. More on this case can be found on GPHF’s Facebook timeline.
