2025: Quality assessment of illicit Artemether-Lumefantrine antimalarials in West Africa
Counterfeit and substandard medicines, especially in developing nations like Ivory Coast, worsen disease resistance and cause preventable deaths. This study assessed artemether-lumefantrine quality on the Ivorian illicit market using the GPHF-Minilab®. Of 15 samples, 20% lacked manufacturer info, 7% had no instructions, and 20% showed physical degradation. While 93% met disintegration standards, 26% were underdosed and 7% overdosed, revealing manufacturing flaws. The GPHF-Minilab® effectively identifies substandard drugs, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and quality control.
