2018: Falsified cefixime tablets detected in DR-Congo
Onset 2018, a Minilab working group in the Democratic Republic of Congo found two brands of fake cefixime tablets containing very little or no active pharmaceutical ingredient, respectively. The recovery of patients is adversely hampered by these spurious and dodgy antibiotics. Next to the individual health risk for patients consuming these sub-potent anti-infective products, fake medicines containing only a fraction of antibacterial agents are also forming a collective health considering the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance. For more on this, go the appropriate WHO Medical Product Alert 1/2018 or to the Minilab’s Facebook timeline.
